On September 20th of this year, the Moonridge Group Hosted its 13th annual Philanthropy Leaders’ Summit statewide in Nevada. The theme of this year’s event was “Where the Future of Giving is Going” and speakers included singer and philanthropist Shania Twain, chef Aarón Sánchez, a philanthropist and judge on “Master Chef”. Pumam Mathur and Staci Alonso served as mistress of ceremonies for the events.
Nevada Business Magazine partnered with the Moonridge Group for the second year on this event.
Trailblazing Philanthropy Award Honorees
Northern Nevada
Corporation – SilverSummit Healthplan
SilverSummit Healthplan is a managed care plan that provides health insurance to the people of Nevada. SilverSummit exists to improve the health of its members through focused, compassionate, and coordinated care. Their community investment program is designed to improve members’ health outcomes by reducing barriers they face in achieving “whole person care” – not just focusing on physical health needs but also addressing each member’s emotional well being and socioeconomic needs. To date, SilverSummit Healthplan has invested millions of dollars in organizations that address a variety of community needs.
Individual Philanthropist – Cindy Carano
Cindy Carano is a third-generation Reno-ite and philanthropist driven to make a difference in the community through charitable giving and community service. From her early days in Reno’s public schools to her career in hospitality, Cindy’s commitment to bettering the community has remained steadfast. Cindy recently received the Dixie May Award from the Children’s Cabinet and, as a former foster parent, works to keep children safe and families together. Cindy is the founding chair of Moonridge Group’s Greater Good Council, Northern Nevada, the former Chair of the Women’s Giving Circle (WGC) at the Community Foundation of Northern Nevada (CFNN) and the former Chair of the Nevada Women’s Fund. She established a donor advised fund at CFNN to benefit women and children of Northern Nevada for years to come.
Southern Nevada
Corporation – San Manuel Gaming & Hospitality Authority/Palms Cares
Palms Casino Resort is the first casino resort in Las Vegas fully owned and operated by a Native American tribe, the San Manuel Gaming & Hospitality Authority (SMGHA). Together, SMGHA and Palms are committed to creating change in the Las Vegas community through charitable giving. They recognize the importance of answering the call of Yawa’—to act upon one’s beliefs—in our commitment to support organizations helping to create a better tomorrow. They aim to make a positive impact in the lives of those in need and facing economic challenges in Nevada.
Individual Philanthropist –Crystal Hirschi
Crystal Hirschi is the executive vice president and co-owner of Hirschi Companies. Crystal and her husband Chad created Hirschi Helping Hands, a corporate philanthropic branch of the business dedicated to giving back to the community. Her philanthropic work has taken her to nearly 50 countries with the goal of building and teaching. She has served in developing countries, assisting in building schools and providing microloans to help people in small villages start businesses. She was invited to participate in a dialogue at the United Nations in Austria to discuss quicker responses to human trafficking in children. She is currently on the education advisory committee for the city of North Las Vegas, she sits on multiple boards, and is the co-chair for one drop foundations walk for water.
